Eating Disorders in Adolescents
Many eating disorders in students can start as early as age 7. To most people that sounds crazy, because how would a student even know what one is at that age? That is the issue. At such an early age most students aren't informed about what a healthy lifestyle is. Many children are not conscious of their body image, but those who are do not realize what they are doing to themselves at such a young age. Now a days we know the controversy of the Barbie doll with little girls and how they think that one day they will look like that. Boys on the other hand, worry more so about their weight when it comes to sports and making different weight classes.
-42% of 1st-3rd grade girls want to be thinner
-81% of ten year olds are afraid of being fat
-46% of nine to eleven year olds are "sometimes" or "often" on diets
*statistics taken from the NEDA (National Eating Disorder Association) website

Eating Disorders in Teens
"Over one half of teenage girls and nearly one third of teenage boys use unhealthy weight control behaviors such as skipping meals, fasting, smoking cigarettes, vomiting, or laxatives."This idea may not come as a shock to many students, especially college ones. Being in high school when there is so much competition between both boys and girls gives them the ability to try new things that may take a turn for the worst. Not only may competition be a factor but family, friends and stress can also play a contributing role. Transitioning to college is a big change for everyone who experiecnes it, some for the better and some for the worst. Guys and girls start doing things they thought they never would and soon their bodies start to transform. it is imprtant to keep in mind that while we are in college away from home that we are the ones now responsible for our bodies and taking care of them.
Eating Disorders in Adults
Although we may think that adults know better, an eating disorder for them is a diet gone wrong. A statistic from the NEDA (National Eating Disorder Association) website shows that 25% of men and 45% of women are on a diet at any given point. The ideas of diets are to transform your body to what you want it to look like and to make it look better. But when adults diet their bodies start lacking the nutritious values of certain foods they need in order to stay healthy. Though they may think they aren't causing their body harm, a diet needs to be maintained and regulated by a profession or else it can get out of hand and unhealthy.
